German pianist and film composer Christian Pabst is a true storyteller. While being deeply rooted and connected to the greats of jazz, Christian developed an original, strong and genre transcending voice as a pianist and composer. Finding inspiration not only in the magnificent diversity of the arts but also in traveling and everyday life, his radiant music is very visual and inspires your imagination. “I want to create music that speaks to the heart and the mind alike” says the pianist.
Growing up in a small German village close to the French border, Christian always listened as a kid to his brother playing their 1980’s home organ. He also wanted to play music and started to take piano lessons. Later, when he heard the local youth Big Band for the first time, he felt instantly connected to jazz and improvisation. His thirst for knowledge and understanding of music led him to study jazz piano and film music at the renowned conservatories of Amsterdam, Paris and Copenhagen. Now, he’s playing concerts all over Europe, as well as in the USA, South-Africa, India, Turkey, … etc.
Christian lends his strong musical voice to the powerhouse “Pitch Plot 4”, an international quartet led by flutist Jeroen Pek. Pitch Plot 4 played a concert here at Oak Mountain Hideaway in May of 2017. Joining Christian as part of his trio will be New York bassist James Cammack (who worked for 30 years with Ahmad Jamal) who also was part of Pitch Plot 4 when they played a concert here last year. Also joining Christian will be Chris Parker on drums. Chris had an impressive bio as being the drummer on SNL and touring and recording with the likes of Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Miles Davis, and many others!
When he is not playing the piano, Christian is busy composing film scores. Many movies that he scored were awarded with prizes and are being screened all over the world. Recently, the short movie “Dancin’ the Camera” was nominated for the “Gouden Kalf”, the Dutch Oscar.
Christian has also been teaching for many years at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, offering classes in music theory, harmony at the piano, advanced theory and music management. He was also involved in building up the new online learning platform of the conservatory (CvA Online).
Join us for an evening of Jazz, with musicians of impeccable talent! Something you don’t have to travel all the way to New York City to see but that we are fortunate to have right here in the mountains of Central Pennsylvania!
As always, feel free to bring your favorite beverage, and a snack to share. We provide coffee, tea, water, and light snacks.
We are so thrilled to finally be ready to open our cabin as our main B&B at Oak Mountain Hideaway! We are currently offering two rooms in the main house on Airbnb, but we will be offering the entire cabin which will hold 4-6 people (depending on if some wouldn’t mind using an air mattress!) The cabin has one bedroom and a futon in the great room, so it will easily accommodate four people. There is one bath with a shower, a kitchen and the great room. The porch has a gorgeous view where you can get up early to watch the deer grazing (the deer also come out in the evening, if you’re not an early riser) and we have the second darkest skies in Pennsylvania so star gazing is phenomenal! The weekend of our Grand Opening also happens to be the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower, so you may want to book a camping spot!
Here are the details for the Grand Opening:
(This is an ADULT ONLY event) 18+
We will offer primitive camping – a spot to pitch a tent (and we’ll have a port-a-john) for $10/night for a tent with up to four people. You may camp Saturday, or Sunday or both.
On Saturday, August 11, from 5:00-7:00 PM we will open the property to anyone wishing to camp overnight. First come – first pick of your spot.
From 7:00-9:00 PM we will have live music by local musicians and one of our recent House Concert performers, Austin MacRae from Ithaca, NY!
Here is the lineup:
Also from 7-9PM, we will be offering tours of North Star Cabin, aka ‘Bill’s house’ from the movie, Generational Sins, it will feature some remnants of the film and behind the scene photos! We hope to also have a food vendor or two so you can purchase food during the evening.
At around 9PM Spencer T. Folmar, Director and co-writer of the script, will be on hand to introduce the film! We are very fortunate and excited to have him here with us for this screening! He will be in the area working on his next Hard Faith film, Shooting Heroin. Cost for the outdoor screening is $7/person.
When the movie is over, we will have a campfire (weather permitting) but it will be extinguished and quiet time will begin at 11:00 PM. We have previously booked Hipcampers who chose our location in order to view the Perseid Meteor Shower and we promised them DARK SKIES so all lights will be put out at 11 PM on Saturday and Sunday night. Bring your chairs and blankets and dress for the weather. We will have a tent in case of inclement weather. All activities will still go on under the cover of the tent.
If you choose to camp here for the weekend, there is plenty to do in the area! Visit Clearfield County has a host of resources to help you plan your activities based on your interest. There is hiking, canoeing and kayaking (the West Branch of the Susquehanna is only one mile from our property – bring a tube and float!) and elk viewing – you don’t have to travel all the way to Benezette – there are good sized herds just a few miles from here. Or, you can just sit back and relax and enjoy the property, we have tons of birds and wildlife to entertain you. You can play yard games or just enjoy some downtime away from technology, unplugged! If you can’t bear to be disconnected, we do get a good signal with Verizon. AT&T… not so much.
On Sunday, August 12 at 7PM we’re super excited to be hosting Wildeyes for a house concert!
Deep Nashville roots, rich Western influence, a veritable fortune of experiences touring in support of a-list artists, and a non-sexy, woodshed, 1950ʼs American work-ethic have unified Daniel and Emily Kohavi and Max Hoffman to forge the marvel of Wildeyes.
A writing machine, Wildeyes has the uncanny ability to viscerally connect across generations, ideologies and genres with pure American music wandering South and West. Wildeyes performances are inimitable gifts that sonically, visually and emotionally retrieve and elevate you.
If the weather cooperates, we are hoping to do this show as a campfire session. For the outdoor show, bring lawn chairs or a blanket.

The Novel Ideas are a country-folk quartet of friends hailing from the great state of Massachusetts.
Featuring the voices of three songwriters, they create a blend of pastoral, harmony driven, and plaintive Americana. Their upcoming self-titled album, produced by Rick Parker (Lord Huron) and mixed by Ryan Freeland (Ray LaMontagne, Bonnie Raitt), showcases the band at its best. Capturing the spirit of their live performance in recorded form wasn’t easy, but the result is a heartfelt representation of who The Novel Ideas are as a band. Track by track, The Novel Ideas represents a contribution to the country-folk scene that balances love-and-loss melancholy with thoughtful instrumentation and intricate vocal arrangements.
Sarah Grella – Vocals
Danny Hoshino – Guitar, Pedal Steel, Vocals
James Parkington – Bass, Vocals

We’re thrilled to welcome back an Oak Mountain Hideaway favorite artist – Ari Hest! We’ll start off with a summer Sunday afternoon potluck and end with an evening of Ari’s incredible voice, guitar and piano playing! He is a phenomenal songwriter. Here’s more about Ari…
Ari released two independent albums and built a loyal following touring the U.S. college circuit extensively between 2000 and 2003. He then released two albums on Columbia Records, Someone To Tell(2004) and The Break-In(2007) all the while touring both in the U.S. and abroad with the likes of Martin Sexton, Suzanne Vega, and Ani Difranco.
In 2008, Ari wrote, recorded and released a new song every Monday in his 52 project, and released Twelve Mondays in 2009, a collection of re-mixed fan favorites from 52. From 2010-2016, Ari continued to tour relentlessly and released four other LP’s: Sunset Over Hope Street(2011), The Fire Plays(2012), Shouts And Whispers(2015), and the Grammy nominated Silver Skies Blue(2016), a duets album with Judy Collins. Ari released his ninth LP, Natural, in the spring of 2017. He is also half of the Bossa Nova inspired band Bluebirds of Paradise, a collaboration with Chrissi Poland.
Many of Ari’s songs have appeared on TV and film – The Path, The Lincoln Lawyer, Private Practice, Army Wives, and One Tree Hill to name a few.
